I believe a strong, secure border is the first step to fixing our broken immigration system. We are a nation of laws and we have a duty to prevent unlawful entry into our country. As such, I have been concerned by recent calls from some of my colleagues in Congress to “abolish ICE.” I find this incredibly misguided.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducts a variety of operations to ensure the safety of Americans and proper enforcement of our laws.
- Fighting the Opioid Epidemic: ICE plays a critical role in seizing drugs that cartels illegally transport across our border.
- Stopping Human Trafficking and Smuggling: ICE is essential to uncovering human trafficking rings and rescuing victims.
- Removing Criminals From Our Comminutes: Every year ICE arrests thousands of illegal immigrants involved in drug deals, fraud, weapons smuggling, sexual assault, and murder.
- Preventing Terrorism: ICE works to identify and deport or prevent entry of dangerous individuals who pose a terror threat to our nation.
Calls to abolish ICE threaten the safety of millions of Americans. As your member of Congress, I will work to ensure our law enforcement officials have the resources they need and know that they have my full support.
