Wittman Reintroduces Adoption Information Act, December 1, 2017
WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01), joined by Adoption Caucus Chairman Trent Franks (AZ-08), Values Action Caucus Chairwoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-04), Congressman Randy Weber (TX-14), Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01), Congressman Jody B. Hice (GA-10), Congressman Thomas Massie (KY-04), Congressman David Rouzer (NC-07), and Congressman Steve Pearce (NM-02), reintroduced the Adoption Information Act.
This bill would require family planning services to provide pamphlets containing contact information of adoption centers to a person receiving family planning services, at the time the person inquires about the services. A family planning services project’s eligibility to receive federal grants or contracts through the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) would be contingent upon the execution of this requirement.
“The Adoption Information Act is a simple step we can take to make a difference in this world,” Wittman said. “Adoption isn’t a partisan issue. We can all agree that the most vulnerable members of our community deserve a place to call home and a place to find and reach their full potential. Adoptive families face unique challenges, and on the other side of those challenges, they’re rewarded with unique blessings and with the satisfaction of having said “yes” when others were saying “no.” As a child of adoption, I am thankful every day that my parents chose me and raised me in a loving family.”
“Adoption provides an alternative to the brutality of abortion,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List. “It gives a woman the chance to allow her child to live and brings joy to a couple eagerly waiting for a child to love. We thank Rep. Wittman for leading the effort to ensure that women have information about all the life-affirming options that are available.”
“The Republican pro-life ethic doesn’t end at birth, it extends to make sure that every child is a wanted child,” said Congressman Franks. “There is both pedagogical and practical value in passing laws incentivizing adoption and making information about how families can adopt more accessible – Americans must know their magnanimity will be rewarded here and, more importantly, in heaven.”
“Adoption is a great option and one I wish more women would consider instead of abortion,” said Congresswoman Hartzler. “ Every child deserves a loving family and adoption is a loving way to make a family. This bill will empower women with crucial information they need at a critical time.”
Congressman Rob Wittman represents the 1st District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee, where he is the Chairman of the Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee.
